Caitlin Goes Kickboxing

14 January 2009 3 Comments

Yesterday, my friend Caitlin (@PositivelyNSt) tweeted, “I don’t think my back has ever been this sore all over. Someone was a little too enthusiastic at kickboxing last night.”

I’ve known Caitlin since sometime in the mid-90’s and I’ve never known her to be a kickboxer, so I decided to conduct an interview.

When and how did you get into kickboxing?

For the longish story, follow this link:

Did any movies inspire you to take up kickboxing?

No. I wish I could say that I’d always dreamed of kickboxing ever since I first saw the Karate Kid as a child, but that would be a lie.
I’ve never even seen the Karate Kid. Some child of the ’80s I am.

Is your back sore because you were too enthusiastic or because an instructor or classmate was enthusiastically kicking and/punching your back?

I was too enthusiastic. It’s too easy to get caught up in the Hook!Hook! Cross! Cross! of it all. Then you wake up the next morning to find yourself trapped in the body of a 63-year-old and fumbling through the medicine cabinet for your Icy Hot.

Also, my kickboxing form is TERRIBLE. You know how Elaine Benes danced on Seinfeld? It looks a lot like that.

What’s your favorite kickboxing move?

Side kick. This is probably the primary cause of my back spasms. This is also the move I was doing when I nailed my roommate in the face with one of my slippers.

How many seconds would it take for you to make a 12-year-old cry with your talents?

With my kickboxing talents? Depending on what kind of footwear I’m wearing, I’d say no more than 5 seconds. (With my singing talents? Instant tears and pleas for mercy.)

How do you feel about Mixed Martial Arts, like the Ultimate Fighting Championship?

I’m actually more of an annoying pacifist. I really don’t like violence (or quasi-violence) of any kind. I have a friend in Youngstown who’s obsessed with Kelly Pavlik and UFC – otherwise, I’d have no idea what you’re talking about.

I say to you, “Caitlin, I see you’re into karate.” You respond …

“Say what?”

Thank you Caitlin for your time!

Thanks, Tim! It was a pleasure being interviewed, even though it’s quite apparent that I’m clueless about kickboxing and all related martial arts. And I have to laugh at that photo — that girl looks like she’s seriously considering planting a smooch on that punching bag, and I have this urge to yell, “Don’t! Ringworm!”

Maybe she’s planning to plant a smooch while kneeing it under the ribs! Thanks again for taking the time to do this ridiculous interview.

    Interesting.

I was looking for a film called Kickboxer Kid (a Korean version of Karate Kid) and I came across this.

Kickboxer Kid has better fights than Karate Kid and I’ll write a review for the film sometime this month on both the Far East Films and City On Fire web sites. I first saw the film in 1998 and it was as a rental. It’s a really rare film to find and I was lucky to order it from the British Amazon site.
